Name of the mutant parasite
RMgm numberRMgm-4312
Principal namePbCap93-KO
Alternative name
Standardized name
Is the mutant parasite cloned after genetic modificationYes
Phenotype
Asexual blood stageNot different from wild type
Gametocyte/GameteNot different from wild type
Fertilization and ookineteNot tested
OocystReduced oocyst production. Mutant oocysts were significantly smaller than wild type parasite oocysts.
SporozoiteNot tested
Liver stageNot tested
Additional remarks phenotype

Mutant/mutation
The mutant lacks expression of PbCap93

Protein (function)
The protein was selected in a screen based on the following criteria: “expressed only in the oocyst stage,” “possessing transmembrane domains,” and “conserved proteins with unknown function”.

Phenotype
Reduced oocyst production. Mutant oocysts were significantly smaller than wild type parasite oocytes. No detailed information on sporozoite production.

Additional information
Using anti-PbCap93 antibodies evidence is presented for absence of expression in blood stages and sporozoites; expression in day 15 oocysts 'but its expression diminished by day 17 when the sporozoites within the oocysts matured'. Evidence is presented for a location at the oocyst capsule
