The gene is transcribed in female gametocytes and its transcripts are subject to translational repression in gametocytes (Mair, G.R. et al, 2006, Science 313, 667-669; Braks, J.A.M. et al., 2008, Nucleic acids Research 36, 1176-86).

Phenotype
The phenotype of the mutant has not been analysed in detail. The mutant showed normal growth of the blood stages and normal production of gametocytes and ookinetes. The mutant can be obtained from the Leiden Malaria Research Group.
